Today’s review is based on a topic I get a lot of questions about — the rugs in our home. How do I like them? How are they holding up? Where did I get each one? Would I recommend them to others?
Today I figured it would be helpful to create a one-stop shopping resource that answers ALL of these questions. Plus, I figured a rug review post like this will help others feel more confident if they are purchasing one of these rugs. Rugs are an investment so any honest feedback is helpful, right?
Family Room Rug (11 out of 10)
This is by far one of the most popular items here on the DIY Playbook and I can see why! Earning an 11 out of 10,
this rug has earned more than a perfect score because I cannot recommend it enough to others who may be considering investing in this versatile piece. Plus, I get the most questions about this rug from readers who are hesitant to buy it and I’m here to tell you to DO IT!
It’s very affordable compared to its competitors, its soft enough to play/crawl around on, it matches with just about any decor/color scheme, and it magically hides stains even though it’s a light color. How it does all of these things, I don’t know. But I am willing to go on the record and say this is the unicorn of large area rugs!
I think this pattern/quality would work well in a family room, bedroom, office, nursery, pretty much anywhere! It’s amazing, plus it comes in
so many different sizes to fit your space’s needs. I do use a
rug pad under it to add more padding but didn’t use one in my old house when I had this rug (in the 8×10 size) in
our office. I guess it all depends on how much cushion you’re looking for.
We have had the 12×15 size in our family room for just over a year and a half, and I would buy a back-up to store for the day I need a new one. I just love it that much.
Dining Room Rug (9.5 out of 10)
This dining room rug is another affordable, versatile and amazing find! We bought it for our dining room and it really deserves a 15 out of 10 for being easily washable. Ben throws pasta on it several times a week and although the rug is no longer “perfect”, it’s pretty darn close considering how much abuse it sees on an everyday basis.
The only reason that this rug earned a 9.5 out of 10 is that it has very little to no pile on it. It is not what you would consider plush, so I wouldn’t recommend it for a space that you want to roll around on the floor and feel cozy (maybe like a nursery). It’s very forgiving of stains for this reason but not super warm and cozy, which is why it got a slight point deduction.
For our dining room though, it’s absolutely perfect and we love it so much. I especially love that it coordinates with our dining room without feeling too matchy-matchy. It’s also neutral enough that it works next to our bold, vintage runner in the kitchen. If you’re on the hunt for a rug that doesn’t need to be super plush, I’d highly recommend this one!
Kitchen Runner (9.5 out of 10)
I found such an amazing deal on this vintage runner on eBay. But because it’s vintage, I can’t link a replica. However, I bought it from
this eBay seller who I found to be the most affordable when it comes to vintage rugs (more
tips on buying vintage rugs here).
I found this one for $150 when all the other competitor runners I was looking at ran $800+!! If you’re in the game for a vintage rug/runner, definitely check out this seller!
In terms of having a vintage runner in the kitchen, I’m extremely happy with it so far. To be perfectly honest, we’ve had our fair share of spills and splatters on this rug (coffee, red sauce, lots of crumbs!) and this rug’s bold colors do an amazing job of hiding everything.
If I were to make this decision again, I would do the exact same thing. And I even think I’m a forever member of “Team Bold Runner in the Kitchen”. Having a runner in the kitchen hasn’t been nearly as worrisome or fragile as I anticipated. In fact, I’d say it’s been just the opposite!
Master Bedroom Rug (9 out of 10)
This is another affordable rug that I highly recommend and another one I get a lot of questions about. We have the 7’10” x 11’2″ size (for under $200!!) and do not have a rug pad under this rug, mostly because I figured the rug pad would be wasted under our bed.
The colors are a bit bolder at night but not as bold as the website suggests (which is a question I get every single time we post this. It just looks soooo vibrant online and less so in person). I scored this rug as a 9 out of 10 because the rug itself is very thin. It’s extremely soft on your feet but it’s very thin so I wouldn’t recommend putting it on the ground without a rug pad in certain areas (like a playroom, kids’ bedroom, etc.). If you don’t need it to be thick (like in our bedroom), the thinness shouldn’t matter as much.
I also like the busy pattern because it’s very forgiving. I accidentally spilled my blush set on the floor, where the entire thing shattered into a ton of tiny pieces. Then I proceeded to vacuum it up, which made the problem so much worse (pink blush stains everywhere!). Long story short, no one would ever be able to tell thanks to a lot of scrubbing and the busy pattern. #thankgoodness
Nursery Rug (10 out of 10)
I feel bad giving another glowing review, but I think you can tell by now that I really do love all of our rugs! I was a tad nervous to buy
this rug because I tend to gravitate toward light colored rugs, especially when they are this big. But purchasing a light colored rug in a nursery, that will eventually turn into a little boys room, seemed a bit risky for the long haul.
I went with this dark patterned rug and I’m so happy that I did. The price tag for
this 10×14 rug was phenomenal for the size (right around $300), especially when compared to other rugs that had this vintage-inspired look. So far this dark rug has seen its fair share of diaper mishaps and it looks as good as new.
It’s soft and plush, but I also bought
a rug pad to go under this rug to make it even cushier for the nursery. I would highly recommend this rug to others who are looking for something dark or something vintage-inspired (without the vintage rug price tag)!
Mudroom Runner (8 out of 10)
Unfortunately, I don’t have a link because it is one-of-a-kind. I paid a pretty penny for it (at $400-ish I think?), which is why I didn’t give it a perfect score. Now that I know what I know about
the more affordable eBay seller I dished about, I probably wouldn’t pay as much for a runner ever again.. but you live and you learn, right? Plus, I can always sell it and probably make my money back (if not a bit more since it is vintage).
And although I really like this rug, I’d probably opt for richer colors (maybe reds/navy family) next time around. I really like the spring-ish colors, but sometimes I think the light colors blend into the tile a bit more than I’d like, making the rug feel a bit washed out in this space.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, I’m extremely happy with ALL of the rugs in our house. Each one is a bit different, but all of them were relatively affordable (considering any rug is an investment and I needed a few really large ones). I don’t anticipate changing any of them any time soon, which proves how much I truly enjoy each one. Plus, all of them have been very forgiving to life’s “accidents”.
Bottom line, if you’re eyeing one of these rugs, I would highly recommend any of them! And I hope this rug review was helpful for you because I know that rug shopping can be tough. If you need help figuring out what size rug you need for your space, this post has all of the details and insight.
