We worked with Lowe’s Home Improvement for this entire project, and I cannot recommend them enough if you are considering a kitchen makeover. From choosing the cabinets to the installation of everything, Lowe’s & their team have been so accommodating.
Before & After Kitchen Makeover
Living through a kitchen renovation is definitely not for the faint of heart. Not only is it messy (holy dust!), but it’s also hard to eat healthily and maintain a “normal” life without appliances or running water available! Not to mention the decision making, organizing, ordering, and overseeing…there’s just a lot that goes into executing a kitchen makeover.
In some cases, I learned these things the hard way but I guess that’s better than nothing? Surviving my first kitchen renovation has made me feel a lot more confident to ever try this again… someday.
Black And White Kitchen Reveal
My favorite part of the entire kitchen is the fact that I took a chance on black and white Kraftmaid cabinets with built-in organization. The safe thing would have been to go with all white kitchen cabinets (a classic look that never gets old IMO). BUT, I’m glad that I stepped outside of my comfort zone and incorporated black cabinets into this design plan. I just love the two-toned cabinets so much!
Open Shelving
Another “risk” that was outside of my comfort zone was incorporating open shelving into our kitchen. This decision was not one I made lightly, but it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the kitchen. Pairing the shelves with a wall full of this gorgeous Allen + Roth Subway Tile and the stunning Whirlpool hood adds so much style to this space, while still keeping it functional.
Other Dreamy Features
Like I mentioned earlier this month, I always dreamed of having a farmhouse sink someday. When the team at Lowe’s reassured me that this was definitely an option, even without a massive kitchen, I was beyond thrilled. I’m happy to report that I love everything about this Elkay farmhouse sink, especially how well it partners with the Moen pull-down faucet we chose (this one has sensor technology!). It feels so luxurious every time I use it, even if I am doing a not-so-glamorous job like rinsing dishes.
Open Concept
I still think that working with the designer to come up with a more open-concept with more storage was one of the best decisions we made. Not only does the kitchen feel so much bigger, but we were able to double the amount of cabinet space we have available, which has been such a game-changer! We have several cabinets in the dining room that are EMPTY because we have nothing to store in them. This was a “problem” I didn’t anticipate, but one I welcome with open arms.
A Stunning Focal Point
And speaking of a game-changer… this wall has become such a focal point in our kitchen that makes a world of difference. I had two goals when I set out to re-do our kitchen.
- Create a more open concept
- Make the kitchen lighter, brighter, and airier
I give full credit to this wall for achieving both of those goals. The Whirlpool hood is stunning, the Delta pot-filler is amazing, and I just love how we were able to mix and match the chrome finishes with the brass finishes to create more of a layered look.
The idea to mix and match was born when I found these gorgeous Amerock Blackrock knobs and pulls. I was instantly sold and chose the rest of my metal finishes based on those first two pieces. My advice for others hesitant to mix and match? You can do it and I’m confident you’ll be happy about your decision to try once everything comes together!
Feeling Grateful
The last 5 (!!) months have been quite the adventure, but living in our new kitchen has made all the hard work well worth it.
Would I rush into another kitchen renovation any time soon? Definitely not! Would I do a few things differently? Absolutely (more on that next week!). Do I love our black and white kitchen from Lowe’s? More than I ever dreamed I would!
Thank you guys so much for sticking around as we chipped away at this project one week at a time. You have shared your ideas, your encouragement, and your support and I could not be more grateful for ALL of it!
Here is a very detailed list of all of the sources, so you have a one-stop-shopping resource of everything (from countertop names to paint colors and everything in between).
In the meantime, thank you for everything! I hope I was able to shed some light on this process and prove that if a rookie like me can survive a kitchen reveal like this, I know that you can too!!
