It’s been a while since we’ve chatted about my brother’s guest room space and I apologize for that. Things have been crazy around here with the new house and I wanted to get that big news on the blog as quickly as possible! But before we dive into all things #FinnFixerUpper, I just had to show you guys the dark green guest room reveal. And it’s good. So darn good.
“Obsessed” is probably the best word to describe how I feel about this room. I am so obsessed. This was such a fun project for me because, at a time when my home in complete disarray from packing (ughhh, so messy), I was able to style and decorate this entire guest bedroom. Best feeling ever. Since Finn and I will be nomads for the next two months, we may actually crash in this room for at least a few nights (to give my poor mom a break from us!). And I’m so happy about that because it’s the comfiest guest room ever and I know I’m going to sleep so well in here.
Before we get to the details, let me catch you up on the past blog posts from this space…
Dark Green Guest Room Makeover
Let me give you a little reminder of what this space looked before I got my hands on it. It’s a big room with amazing natural light and gorgeous molding. I put my poor brother, Ryan, on blast for having tons of stuff all over this room, but he really did use it as a personal dumping ground for awhile there. The goal was to give this room a new life and make it feel a little less thrown together. Plus, Ryan and Sarah (his fiancee!! They just got engaged last week!) were open to doing something a little different and wanted to go really dark on the walls.
Here’s the space now. So cozy, moody, and ready for guests!
The biggest change is the new paint color. We found the perfect dark green (Essex Green) and it put us on the right path from the start.
The Furniture
The only piece we kept in the space from the before photo is the bed. The bed frame is from Room & Board and it works really well in the room even with the changes. All of the other furniture in the room was donated and replaced with new.
Aren’t these nightstands fantastic? I love the unique shape, the light wood, and how about the cute little tassels? Not to mention, they actually have lots of storage with the deep drawers and little shelf (which would be perfect for a pretty coffee table book).
Because the walls are so dark, I wanted to go with a light nightstand that would pop against the walls. Even though this room is moody, it doesn’t feel like a dungeon because of the light pieces we incorporated into the room.
On the flip side, I did go with a black dresser in here. I didn’t want to do another wood piece, and I felt like white would be too stark against the wall. Because this black dresser is directly across from the window, it doesn’t get lost in the corner and instead looks pretty cool against the dark green walls.
I love the gold hardware on the piece and it has tons of storage (the perfect spot for my brother to hide all of his things!).
O.M.G….the rug! I think I’m going to buy this bad boy for our new house because it’s just so good. It adds color and pattern without being over the top. Plus, the price is fantastic for a rug of this size! We went with a 9×12 and it fits the room well (the bed is a queen).
If you’re looking to add an oriental-inspired rug (without the high price tag) this rug is for you! I think it makes the room so much more interesting.
The Accessories
Here’s another item I’m planning to use in our new house…this faux olive tree. The light green leaves are so pretty and it looks incredibly real! It adds some color, texture, and height in the corner near the curtains.
Speaking of curtains, I still can’t believe how they transformed the room. Even though they won’t be drawn closed very often (Ryan and Sarah have roller shades), the curtains are such a necessity in this room. They bring so much warmth and height to the window wall and I love the off-white color. Plus, the gold curtain rod pops against that green.
On the nightstands, I used these creamy lamps. They’re a good chunky size and again… I love the texture they add to the space. Even though this room isn’t packed with color, the texture keeps things interesting.
I wanted to do a mirror on the dresser to bounce some of the light from the window. Plus, a mirror in a guest room is always a good idea because guests can then get ready in their room and not feel like they’re taking over your bathroom. When I spotted this mirror while strolling around Target, I knew it was a keeper!
To add some height to the dresser, I used a white vase and some faux dogwood stems. The basket tray (from HomeGoods) can act as a spot for guests to drop their wallet, coins, etc. I think it’s always a good idea to keep accessories pretty minimal in a guest room so your guests have room for their items.
Next to the nightstand, we added this basket that now serves as my brother’s hamper! If you remember from the before post, he had a hamper that was a bit of an eyesore. This one conceals his dirty laundry and also hides the outlet and wires behind it. It’s a win-win…
Ryan and Sarah already had some cool decor (like this gold peacock tray!), so I spread that out throughout the room.
Oh, and the art! We’ve gotta chat about the art over the bed. I found this huge piece from HomeGoods for $130 and scooped it up. I had no clue what I was going to do over the bed, but as soon as I found this…I was sold! It’s striking against the dark walls and adds some brightness to the bed area.
This lumbar is actually my pillow from Pottery Barn because the other lumbar I ordered didn’t come in time. But I wanted something colorful and a bit boho to tie the room together. While I love the white bedding and cream blanket, I wanted something bold on the bed too!
